Maybe you're one of the lucky few that will get to play in a Pro-Am leading into The Genesis Invitational this week at Riviera CC. If so, color us jealous! Getting to walk in the shadows of golf's greatest players on one of golf's most hallowed grounds (and actually hit golf shots) is a bucket list item that most of us will never get the chance to check off. That said, whether you can actually post your round at "Hogan's Alley" depends on the format you'll be playing. Check out some "Do's" and "Don'ts" below to ensure your Handicap Index remains accurate and abides by the Rules of Handicapping.
▶ Authorized Formats
Post scores from formats where each player plays their own ball under the Rules of Golf — this includes individual stroke play, match play, and other formats where players complete holes individually.
▶ 9-hole, 18-hole, or 10–17 hole rounds
▶ Someone with You
Your round must be played in the company of at least one other person — this supports peer verification consistent with handicap principles.
▶ Follow the Rules of Golf
Rounds must be played in accordance with the Rules of Golf. This means correct scoring and a genuine attempt to play each hole.
▶ Valid Course
You must be playing on a course with a USGA Course Rating and Slope Rating — this ensures the difficulty of the course is accurately reflected in handicap calculations.
• Playing Less Than 9 Holes
Rounds with fewer than 9 acceptable holes cannot be posted for handicap purposes.
• Not Playing Your Own Ball
If you aren’t playing your ball on every hole (e.g., you pick up and aren’t estimating a most likely score, or you play alternate balls), the score is not acceptable.
• Courses Without Valid Ratings
Scores made on courses without a valid USGA Course Rating and Slope Rating cannot be used in GHIN.
• Limited Club Competitions
Rounds played under conditions that limit the types or number of clubs (e.g., 1-club events or irons-only competitions) are not acceptable.
• Non-Conforming Equipment or Conditions
Using non-conforming clubs or balls, artificial training devices, or other unusual equipment invalidates the score.
• Non-Competitive Relaxed Formats
Rounds not played under the Rules of Golf — such as scrambles, shambles, or social rounds with modified play — generally should not be posted.
Posting scores accurately is essential for a fair and meaningful Handicap Index. Always verify:
